The statement follows news that a large percentage of student nurses who were expected to be employed at the city hospital in the coming weeks, will likely now not have jobs.

The INMO says it's working on difficulties for student nurses at UHG.

It's understood only about 25 out of a graduating class of 60 will be offered jobs at University Hospital Galway in the coming weeks.

This is despite a commitment by Health Minister Simon Harris in recent months to offer employment to all graduating nurses in a bid to retain them in Ireland.

A meeting between the INMO, managers, staff and students at UHG is set to take place next week.

In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, a spokesperson for the Saolta Hospitals Group, which includes UHG, says the HSE must remain within its budget and will retain a percentage of student nurses.

It says all hospitals must work within the resources provided.
