Homily acknowledges merits and mistakes of Bishop Eamonn Casey

Galway Bay fm newsroom - The achievements and mistakes of former Bishop of Galway Eamonn Casey have been highlighted during his funeral homily at Galway Cathedral this afternoon.

The funeral mass was celebrated by Bishop of Clonfert John Kirby and Bishop of Achonry Brendan Kelly - a former priest of the Galway diocese.

The service was concelebrated by retired and serving members of the Irish Hierarchy, priests of the diocese of Galway, Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora, and of the dioceses of Limerick and Kerry.

Priests from other dioceses and religious orders and congregations were also among the concelebrants.

Eamonn Casey was ordained a Catholic priest in 1951- he was appointed Bishop of Kerry 18 years later, and Bishop of Galway in 1976.

He was seen as a progressive and highly influential member of the church, until his resignation in 1992, after reports surfaced of his relationship with American woman Annie Murphy – with whom he had his son, Peter.

During his homily, Bishop Brendan Kelly spoke of Bishop Casey's work with Irish emigrants in the UK.
