Galway Bay fm newsroom - The Health Minister is to contact the Saolta Hospital Group to request an update on the planned re-opening of an orthopaedic theatre at Merlin Park.
It's after Saolta recently revealed that the surgery theatre would re-open by mid-March after being closed since September due to a leaking roof.
However, concerns have been raised that the deadline might be missed - as surgery waiting lists continue to climb as a result of the closure.
Galway West Deputy Hildegarde Naughton says Minister Simon Harris is making enquiries to ensure the orthopaedic theatre re-opens as planned.
Meanwhile, it's expected that a new modular theatre building planned at Merlin Park to provide additional capacity will open around October.
Deputy Naughten says it's crucial that the deadline for this building is also adhered to.
