Galway Bay fm newsroom - Health Minister Simon Harris will tomorrow be urged to include funding for a new emergency department at UHG in the HSE mid-term review.
A delegation from the Regional Health Forum West will travel to Leinster House to meet Minister Harris to highlight the urgent need for a new unit to deal with increasing overcrowding demands.
It's estimated the project could cost between 65 and 120 million euro and would take up to four years to complete.
The 120 million euro plan would involve a seven-storey block with two stories assigned to accident and emergency, and five assigned to maternity and other areas.
Funding has so far only been sanctioned for the design and it's hoped the plans will be complete by the end of the year.
Fine Gael city councillor Padraig Conneely is one of those attending tomorrow's meeting - he says he will also urge the Minister to fund the opening of 25 more beds at the new state of the art 75 bed unit as a short-term measure.
