Over half a million tonnes of goods through Galway port last year

Galway Bay fm newsroom - There's been a slight increase in the amount of freight passing through Galway port.

The latest figures from the Irish Maritime Development Office show over 588 thousands tonnes of goods were handled by the port during 2016.

That's an increase of 5% on the figure for 2015.

The tonnage for Galway port is made up predominantly of 'liquid bulk' - which includes fuel oils, bitumen, and molasses.

Dry bulk accounted for over 128 thousand tonnes – this category includes items such as coal, cement, fertiliser, animal feed and alumina.

A further 21 thousand tonnes of ‘break bulk’ passed through the port last year.

Break bulk goods include timber, steel products and machinery.

Nationally, the IMDO is reporting continuing growth through Irish ports, with an overall increase of 2% in port traffic last year.
