Galway Bay fm newsroom - The chair of the Galway Roscommon Education and Training Board is calling for an emergency meeting of the ETB to discuss the future of Coláiste an Chreagáin in Mountbellew.
Hundreds of people gathered at a public meeting in Mountbellew last night to discuss the issue and an action plan is to be put in place.
The meeting was scheduled to take place in the school, but when locals turned up, the school gates were locked and the meeting had to be moved to the pastoral centre.
It was announced at the end of March that first year students and transition years will not be taken in this year as the school moves towards becoming a further education and training hub.
Parents and locals have vowed to fight the decision, and were supported last night by TDs from across Galway East and Roscommon Galway.
However, GRETB chair Councillor Michael Moegie Maher says he feels it'd be a retrograde step to close the secondary school.
He says the education and training board has a major decision to make.
In the meantime, former TD Paul Connaughton senior who chaired last night's gathering, says a further public meeting will take place on the 8th of May.
