Galway Bay fm newsroom - County planners have given the green light to a proposed Primary Care Centre in Spiddal.
The centres are a key part of the Slaintecare plan, and aim to ensure that people are only referred to hospital when they have complex needs or in the case of emergency.
Lead by Baile Eamoinn Teo, Spiddal Primary Care Centre would be a two story building consisting of 28 therapy and consultant rooms, located on the eastern edge of the village.
The developer says its vision is to see a high quality community healthcare facility delivered in Spiddal - for the benefit of the entire South Connemara Gaeltacht region.
Primary Care Centres provide a single point of access to health services in the local community and are seen a key factor in reforming the health service.
Services typically include Xray and diagnostics, GPs, public health nurses, dental, occupational and physiotherapy, mental health, psychology, opthalmic, mother & baby, and elderly care.
