Green light for major Dexcom manufacturing facility in Athenry

County planners have given the green light for a major new manufacturing facility in Athenry for US multinational Dexcom.

Dexcom manufactures high-tech glucose monitoring equipment for diabetes.

It’s headquarted in California with manufacturing plants in Arizona and Malaysia.

In May, the multinational announced plans for its first European facility in Athenry – and the creation of 1,000 permanent jobs.

It’ll be located at a site on the western edge of the town, and is estimated to represent an investment of €300m over a five year period.

It’ll be a four story manufacturing facility with production areas, warehouses, admin offices and a restaurant, along with 500 car parking spaces.

Also included in the plans are an outdoor landscaped plaza and a 2.1km nature trail, as well as new access roads and pedestrian footpaths and crossings.

County planners have now approved the project, with a hefty 54 conditions attached.

One says that Dexcom must provide shuttle bus services for staff, linking the new facility with Galway City and Athenry Train Station.
