Grattan Road and Ballyloughane beaches re open following ecoli contamination

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Grattan Road and Ballyloughane beaches have re-opened after the ecoli contamination of earlier in the week.

The contamination was caused by the heavy rainfall of last weekend and a leak from the Mutton Island sewage treatment plant.

Results received this afternoon from sampling taken on Wednesday for Ballyloughane and Grattan Beaches indicate that both beaches are now back up to standard and so they have re-opened.

However, a spokesperson for the city council says heavy and possibly thundery showers have been forecast over the weekend and Prior Warning Notices have been erected to advise of the possibility of an increase in bacteria again.

Results of sampling following this event are expected next Wednesday.

The beaches at Salthill, Blackrock and Silverstrand are open for bathing.
