The promised works include the provision of additional berthage, dredging and an extension of the breakwater and the pier.

Deputy Farrell says a consultant has been appointed to progress the scheme, various required surveys have been completed, and contracts and Compulsory Purchase Order documents have been advanced.

However, the Sinn Féin TD has been informed by the Gaeltacht Minister Josepha Madigan, that the future of the project is dependent on the availability of funding.

Dputy Farell says she rejects this approach as it implies that the development is in competition with other projects.

She says the infrastructure is essential for public safety and the sustainability of the island's economy.
