Galway Bay fm newsroom - The Government has announced a number of major hospital and healthcare projects across Galway under the HSE capital plan.
The plan - worth over 2-billion euro - outlines how money will be spent over the next three years.
Funding has been made available under the HSE's new capital plan for a number of key healthcare infrastructure projects in Galway.
Additional spending has been allocated to UHG for the provision of a new emergency department as well as a new maternity unit and paediatric unit.
Funding has also been granted for a new 50-bed unit at Portiuncla Hospital in Ballinasloe as well as the Mental Health Day Hospital in Tuam.
A new ambulance base will also be provided in the city as well as a new modular theatre for orthopaedic surgery at Merlin Park Hospital.
A number of community nursing units across the county including in Tuam, Clifden and at Merlin Park are also included in the plan.
Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney says the next step is to ensure the HSE delivers on the plan.
The plan covers the period between 2019 and 2021 - and will provide for 480 new beds and 30 new primary care centres nationwide over the next three years.
A large part of the national funding will go towards existing projects such as the new Children's Hospital.
Meanwhile, over €300m will be put aside for the HSE's ambulance fleet, to upgrade and maintain vehicles, equipment and facilities.
