Galway Bay fm newsroom - Local TD Michael Fitzmaurice has introduced a fresh motion in the Dáil, that went unopposed by the Government, on exemptions on the distribution and sale of turf.
In his opening statement, he also called on the Government to recognise that turf is an affordable solid fuel that many people are heavily dependent on.
The motion calls for exemptions for those with a wide range of rights to the fuel - as well as the right for turf to be sold under moisture content regulations like with timber and peat briquettes.
Deputy Fitzmaurice said there is an urgent need for a respectful debate that can reach solutions, rather than have both sides badgering each other.
And he argued the Government's previous approach to the issue was using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.
Speaking in response, Minister Eamon Ryan said the Government would not oppose the motion because there is a need to clear the air on the controversial topic.
He said there might be disagreements on issues such as seasoned turf - but he agreed discussion is the way forward.
