Galway Bay fm newsroom - GMIT has officially purchased the Galwegian sports grounds on the Old Dublin Road in a deal estimated to be worth around €9 million.
The acquisition of the 10 acre site has been officially announced this morning by Minister for Higher Education Simon Harris, who's in the city for a series of engagements.
In May of last year, Galwegians RFC voted overwhelmingly in favour of selling the grounds, which are adjacent to Flannery's Hotel and two minutes walk from GMIT.
It's currently working to develop a major new facility elsewhere in the city, and will continue to use the site at Old Dublin Road in the short term.
Galway West TD and Junior Minister Hildegarde Naughton says the purchase is a very significant investment for the future of education in the region.
Speaking to Galway Talks, Minister Simon Harris says now the deal is over the line, they'll start planning for how the site will be used.
