Galway Bay fm newsroom - Gardaí are trying to establish the cause of a major gorse fire in the Connemara area which continues to burn this morning.
The fire started in the Tiernee area of Lettermullen around lunchtime yesterday (3/5) and continued into the early hours of today.
5 units of the fire brigade attended the scene and brought the blaze under control at around 4 this morning.
However a unit of the fire brigade from Carraroe has now returned to the scene as the fire has flared up again.
A number of homes were under threat from the blaze for a time and electricity infrastructure has been damaged.
A unit of the city fire brigade also attended a vegetation fire on the Headford Road at the Curragh Line at around midnight.
Crews remained at the scene for about an hour and a half.
Senior Engineer with Galway Fire Services, Paul Duffy told Keith Finnegan that the pressure put on services by gorse fires can be critical.
