Figures from the Garda Western Region - which covers Galway, Mayo, Clare, Roscommon and Longford - show 25 people lost their lives on roads across the west this year.
A major Christmas and New Year road safety campaign is underway in a bid to make roads across Galway safer this holiday season.
They'll be targetting motorists who are driving while intoxicated, speeding, or using mobile phones.
The Garda Christmas road safety campaign will see over 60 checkpoints carried out every day across the west until January 8th.
Divisional Traffic Inspector, Conor Madden explains that gardaí will be checking people who drive the following morning after a night out.
