From the Galway Bay FM Newsroom:
The Co-ordinator of Galway Autism Partnership says she's not surprised at the results of.a new study which finds the majority of teachers received little training in Autism.
The study, by researchers at the School of Psychology at NUI Galway and the Department of Psychology at the University of Limerick, took the views of 369 mainstream primary school teachers from all 26 counties.
The majority of teachers surveyed said they had received little initial teacher education training in autism, almost no continuous professional development before educating an autistic child and received little professional support,
The study recommends that teachers of autistic students would benefit from receiving mentoring or training from special education teachers.
Aisling Colreavy, Co-ordinator of Galway Autism Partnership says this research confirms that there are gaps in training in the school system.
