The hotel has been given the green light by An Bord Pleanála to build a multi-storey extension.

The plan will see the demolition of the nightclub building, DNA at Ball Alley Lane, to make way for an expansion to include up to 44 hotel bedrooms.

City planners had refused the proposal last May citing a number of concerns.

One cited the overall poor design as well as the impact on the Eyre Square Architectural Conservation Area, and the affect on the city centre streetscape.

This decision was later appealed to An Bord Pleanála by the applicant.

The higher planning authority has now overturned the city council decision, and granted permission with 16 revised conditions.

One states the building is to be reduced in height by one floor to a six-storey building.

Speaking to Sally-Ann Barrett on Galway Talks, Galway East Councillor, Owen Hanely said it doesn't make sense for a young city not to have a nightclub.

Following a meeting of the 'Night Time Economy Task Force' in 2021it was recommended that Galway have a night time economy advisor.

Fast forward to 2022 and calls are still being made for the quick implementation of such an advisor and Councillor Hanley explained the issues such an advisor could address in Galway city.
