Galway Bay fm newsroom - The County Council is being urged to abandon its policy of refusing to build local authority homes on land owned by the applicants.
Galway West/ South Mayo T.D Eamon O'Cuív says the practice would allow rural people to remain on their own land rather than being forced to move into towns or villages.
The practice would see landowners sell their land to the local authority for a token fee, and subsequently rent the home built on that land in return.
The Fianna Fail deputy has raised the issue in the Dail with Housing Minister Simon Coveney.
