Galway TD urges NUIG to follow lead of other institutes in adopting policy for online exams

Galway Bay fm newsroom - A Galway West TD has called on NUIG to follow the lead of other universities in moving student exams online, as infection levels rise.

Sinn Féin TD for Galway West Mairéad Farrell argues that with rising Covid cases and changing public health guidelines, NUIG should move to allow for students to sit their exams online instead of in-person.

She says that this week, both UCC and UCD have taken the decision to allow for remote exams this semester.

Earlier this week, the President of the Students' Union at NUI Galway accused the college of putting students at risk by holding in house exams before Christmas.

Deputy Farrell has written to President Ó hÓgartaigh in relation to the issue.

NUI Galway has advised it plans to hold in person exams and to allow students who cannot attend in person to defer their exams until next April.

She argues this would be just before they are due to sit their exams for next semester, which puts huge pressure on students who are already under immense stress:
