Five weather alerts are in place across the country as Storm Emma prepares to join forces with the existing wintry weather front.
Two status red alerts are in place - one snow-ice warning applies to Munster and Leinster.
It predicts blizzard-like conditions from this evening until Friday morning - giving significant snow drifts in many areas.
The second red alert for Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Wicklow and Meath is warning of accumulations of up to 25cms in places.
Galway's status yellow remains in place until midday tomorrow while the orange alert comes into effect at 8 tomorrow evening.
The warning applies to Connacht, Cavan and Monaghan, and predicts persistent snowfall with possible drifts.
A second orange status warning has been issued for 10 other counties.
Meanwhile, a status yellow alert for snow and ice remains in place for Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Clare and Limerick.
NUI Galway climatologist Dr Tiernan Henry told Keith Finnegan that driving conditions across Galway are likely to become more hazardous as the day progresses as snow becomes packed and freezes over.
