Galway Bay fm newsroom - Rail services to and from Galway could be axed if Irish Rail doesn't receive a major cash injection.
According to today's Irish Independent, the Government has been told that intercity services to Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Kerry, Waterford and Wexford face closure unless there is massive investment.
The worst-case scenario, which would involve the closure of rail services to Galway and places such as Westport and Athlone has been outlined by Irish Rail.
It says it needs a cash investment of 460 million euro to make up for a lack of funding over the past few years.
The report suggests that even if some funding is secured by Irish Rail, little-used services such as the Limerick to Galway route still face closure.
Documents released to the Irish Independent under a Freedom of Information request, show that accumulated losses at Irish Rail stand at 150 million euro.
The Department of Transport will consider funding for Irish Rail in the context of the new National Planning Framework which is due to be published in the coming weeks.
