Galway Bay fm newsroom - The Galway public is set to gather at Galway Cathedral this evening in a prayer service for the people of Ukraine.
The reflection and prayer service will take place from 6.45pm after 6pm mass for Ash Wednesday, and will continue until 9pm.
It comes at the beginning of Lent and will include reflection, guided prayer and adoration.
Two candles gifted from a church in Kiev will be lit at the start of the gathering as a symbol of unity with all those suffering in Ukraine.
Fr. John Gerard Acton told Keith Finnegan on Galway Talks that as the Novena continues online this week, a deep shared sense of sadness and worry has been evident.
Elsewhere, a candelit vigil is also being held this evening in three county towns.
In response to Pope Francis’ call for prayer and fasting for peace in Ukraine and in the World, a short candlelit vigil is being held throughout the Diocese of Clonfert.
It takes place at 6pm outside St Brendan’s Cathedral, Loughrea; St Michael’s Church, Ballinasloe and St Brigid’s Church, Portumna.
