Galway Bay fm newsroom - Galway city has lost its crown as Ireland’s cleanest city, falling from 10th to 27th in the ranking of 40 areas nationwide.
The city has been deemed ‘moderately littered’ in the latest survey by business group Irish Business Against Litter.
Ballybane was again ‘moderately littered’, dropping seven places to 35th.
There was a dramatic fall in the number of towns and cities deemed to be ‘clean’, to its lowest level since 2007.
Kilkenny was again judged best of those surveyed, with ‘seriously littered’ Dublin North Inner City at the foot of the table.
The survey showed PPE litter to be widespread and a rise in the prevalence of cans and glass bottles.
The report found that with less than half the sites surveyed getting the top litter grade and the presence of two very poorly ranking sites, Galway city failed to repeat last year’s success.
High levels of alcohol related litter were found at Eyre Square and Famine Walk with litter also noted at Millennium Park.
