Galway Bay fm newsroom - Galway IFA has come together in an urgent call on local politicians to address concerns over spiralling farm costs in the West.
The group gathered at the farm of Galway IFA Chairperson Stephen Canavan at Ardskeaghbeg, Ballyglunin last night to highlight growing concerns over the price of fertiliser, feed and fuel.
Local politicians were invited to attend the event where calls were made for Government action on the issue.
Stephen Canavan, Galway IFA Chair, told Keith Finnegan on Galway Talks there has been a 300% increase in the price of fertiliser, with farmers forced to do more with less.
He said there is 20% less fertiliser in use this year, with the crisis exaggerated even further in the West of Ireland due to the nature of the land and smaller farms.
He says action is needed if farming is to be sustained in rural Ireland and in particular in the West.
