Galway hoteliers continue to face recruitment challenges

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Galway hoteliers are continuing to face recruitment challenges as the tourism sector recovers in the West.

Some in the county are reporting issues at interview stage where candidates are difficult to source for roles or fail to present themselves professionally.

Others state the main challenge in sourcing staff is the lack of affordable housing on offer in Galway.

Stefan Lundstrom, General Manager of the Galmont Hotel at Lough Atalia Road, told Sally Ann Barrett on Galway Talks he had to make rooms available for 30 staff during the winter period for short term accommodation.

He said they have since sourced accommodation but as a city centre hotel, it's the key challenge in recruiting staff.

John Ryan, Managing Director of the Ardilaun Hotel in Salthill, told the programme the argument around low wages in the past is no longer relevant with the majority paying well above minimum wage in the sector.
