The highest figure is recorded in Dublin North Central, where there are 83 officers per 10,000 people - triple the national average.

Outside Dublin, the Roscommon/Longford district boasts the higher number of Gardai per capita, with 32 officers per 10,000 people,

While the lowest figure nationwide is in Co. Meath, where the figure stands at just 17.

According to the Irish Daily Mail, some TD's have raised concerns about the lack of explanation for the large variations in the regions.

It's noted, for example, Meath and Roscommon/Longford have similar numbers of Gardai - despite Meath having almost 100,000 more residents.
