Galway firm to share in 10 million euro EU research fund

Galway Bay fm newsroom - A Galway business is one of five SME's nationwide which have been selected to share in a major EU fund worth 10 million euro.

Slainte Beoga Teor, also known as Westway Health, will receive the funding for it's work on revolutionary treatment for bovine mastitis.

Westway Health, or Slainte Beoga Teoranta, was established at NUI Galway in 2012 to develop and commericalise research into natural anti-microbial technology.

The company has active development programmes for a number of human and animal diseases, but it's lead product is a revolutionary non-antibiotic treatment for bovine mastitis.

It's hoped the 'PanaMast' treatment will be the first in the world to avoid traditional problems associated with treating the disease such as rising antibiotic resistance and the need to discard milk produced during treatment.

The firm will now have access to up to 2.5 million euro under the EU Scientific Research Fund in a bid to bring the all natural product to the wider market.
