Galway Bay fm newsroom - A city councillor is spearheading a major campaign for new alcohol laws.
Councillor Niall McNelis, who's a member of the HSE regional health forum west, has received unanimous support for a motion which aims to push the new legislation through.
The new laws under the Public Health Act would see amendments made to minimum pricing of alcohol in shops, supermarkets and off-licenses.
The Bill would see alcohol treated as a public health issue - and drinks would be labelled to allow consumers to make informed choices.
It'd also restrict alcohol advertising in areas frequented by children such as near school and youth clubs.
At HSE regional health forum level, the HSE pointed out that it has already set up an alcohol awareness website at askaboutalcohol.ie.
Councillor Niall McNelis proposed writing to the government to ensure the bill is put into legislation as a matter of urgency.
His motion received unanimous support from his fellow forum members from across the west and north-west.
