Galway Bay fm newsroom - A Galway-based consultant has contributed to an international review which suggests that there is no evidence that high levels of total cholesterol causes heart disease.
17 international physicians compiled the paper based on a review of patient data of more than a million people.
Professor Sherif Sultan based at University Hospital Galway says that many people around the world are taking statins to lower cholesterol, despite a lack of proven benefits.
Along with his colleagues, Professor Sultan is recommending abandoning the use of statins and instead identifying the actual causes of heart disease.
Professor Sultan says teaching medical students that cholesterol causes heart disease is wrong.
