Galway city has highest number of primary pupils being taught through Irish

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Galway city has the highest number of primary school children who are taught through the medium of Irish nationwide.

Other areas with rates over 10 per cent include Cork city and county, Galway county, Donegal and Monaghan.

Figures published by the Department of Education show Irish as the primary language of education has increased from 6.4 per cent of primary pupils in 2000 to just over 8 per cent in 2018/19.

According to the Irish Times, the highest rate is in Galway city where almost a quarter of all primary schoolchildren are taught through Irish.

Cavan has the lowest rate at less than 1 per cent of pupils with only one school in the county offering education through Irish.
