Galway City Council warns of significant coastal flooding as orange weather warning comes into effect

Galway City Council are warning of potentially significant coastal flooding at high tide this evening as the status orange weather warning comes into effect for the city and county.

The Orange weather warning issued for Galway, Mayo, Clare, Kerry, Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal came into effect at noon and remains in place until 8pm this evening.

The Galway City Council crisis management team met this morning and based on Met Éireann's current weather alerts, Galway City Council is asking businesses and residents to prepare for potentially significant coastal flooding at high tide this evening between 6.30pm and 8.30pm.

Road Closures are in effect with the Salthill Prom from Seapoint mini-roundabout to Galway Business School and Grattan Road from the junction with Seapoint Road to Claddagh Quay junction with Fr Griffin Road closed until further notice.

The Dock Road from Wolfe Tone Bridge to Lough Atalia junction with Fairgreen Road Upper (including Spanish Arch, Merchants Road and Wolfe Tone Bridge), has reopened but will close at 3pm.

Motorists are requested to avoid these areas and to remove parked cars to avoid the impacts of potential coastal flooding and high winds.

The Silverstrand, Salthill and Toft car parks remain closed and Ballyloughane is local access only.

The Irish Coast Guard are appealing to people to "Stay Back, Stay High, Stay Dry". High seas - the public is advised to stay away from coastal areas during this period.
