Galway-based first ever online Irish language newspaper turns ten years old

The Galway-based first ever online Irish language newspaper has marked ten years in operation

Tuairisc.ie, which has its head office in Barna, has had 8.7 million visits worldwide since launching in 2014.

It is no secret that many people in the Gaeltacht – including those who have college competency in the Irish language – sometimes have to turn to the English version of public and State documents to figure out what is going on.

The Irish language Commissioner, Séamus Ó Coincheanainn has, this week, been telling the Dáil and Seanad committee on the language that corrective action is needed.

The Commissioner, who is based in an Spidéal in the Galway Gaeltacht, proposed the establishment of a central advisory and assistance agency for the purpose of ensuring clarity and accuracy in the use of Irish language public service notices, advertisements, correspondence and announcements.

Mr Ó Concheanainn suggested that this agency would be situated in the Gaeltacht.

He also suggested that there would be a facility that would bring people from various public bodies together in this process.

Allied to that he called for a focus on ensuring that Irish would be the working language in public bodies in Gaeltacht areas.
