Galway Bay fm newsroom - Galway's air quality has been ranked as 'good' in The Environmental Protection Agency's annual report.
The city faired better than further west, with the Eyre Square quality centre getting the top result - a one - and the station in Carna receiving rank three.
The report found around 1,300 people die prematurely here each year because of poor air quality.
While Ireland did meet EU air quality targets last year, it didn't meet World Health Organization guidelines for a number of pollutants.
Senior Scientific Officer with the EPA Patrick Kenny has said too many early deaths are caused by fine particulate matter in solid fuels.
