Galway Bay fm newsroom - The final opening ceremony of Galway 2020, which was set to be launched in the city this evening by President Michael D. Higgins, has been cancelled.
Organisers had previously indicated the event would go ahead despite weather warnings in place.
It would have been the culmination of a week long series of events which began in Clifden on Sunday.
However, it's now been confirmed this evening's event has been cancelled - with Galway 2020 expressing extreme disappointment at the development.
It says the move was necessary in the interests of the safety of the public.
Galway 2020 adds it is saddened for the community cast, its volunteers and the whole team who have worked so hard during the last weeks and months.
