Galway Bay fm newsroom - GAA officials in Galway say the association will deal with a 2 million euro loss expected as a result of abandoning plans to build a new training centre near Athenry.
The county committee has decided to sell 100 acres of land which was bought during the Celtic Tiger with plans to develop it as a state-of-the-art training complex.
According to today's Irish Times, Galway hurling board paid 2.8 million euro for 102 acres of land near Athenry.
It had been hoped the land would be transformed into an 8 million euro training complex.
The hurling board paid more than half a million euro towards the project in 2011, the majority of which was on bank interest.
A deal was subsequently reached with Croke Park officials which saw the GAA take over the loan.
The lands at Mountain South, Athenry are now valued at between 800 thousand and 1 million euro.
The expected loss to the GAA is thought to be around 2 million euro.
The association now bases all activities at its facility in Loughgeorge, near Claregalway.
