Galway Bay fm newsroom - Applications have been submitted for funding for a 2 million euro renovation of the old courthouse in Tuam.
OPW Minister and Galway East TD Sean Canney says he's made submissions to the Capital Investment Plan through the Justice Department, and another submission to the Department of Public Expenditure.
It's hoped the old courthouse at the Dublin Road can be renovated and re-opened as a permanent home for the court service in the long-term.
Meanwhile, Tuam's court sittings have been secured for the next five years following the signing of a lease for temporary accommodation.
The former Bontex facility at the Weir Road has been leased for use as a court for three years, with an option for a two year extension.
Since the closure of Tuam courthouse, the courts service has been renting accommodation at a number of locations in the town, most recently at the site of the Old Grove Hospital.
Works will shortly get underway on the Weir Road facility, and the first court sitting are expected to take place in later summer.
