Former Corrib Great Southern Hotel raised in Dáil during debate on vacant site levy

The issue was raised by Galway West TD Mairéad Farrell, who said the former hotel has been earmarked for demolition for the past eleven years.

Sinn Fein Deputy Farrell argued the 'eyesore' is an embodiment of years of Government inaction on housing, which has directly led to the current crisis.

In March, it was indicated that planned demolition works had stalled due to Covid-19 restrictions.

A recent meeting of Galway City Council heard there is currently a case before the courts in relation to the site.

Addressing Minister Eamon Ryan in the Dáil, Deputy Farrell asked if the Government would commit to reviewing the vacant site levy to stop the hoarding of derelict sites.

Speaking in response, Minister Ryan accepted that the current vacant site levy has not proved as effective as had been hoped.
