Galway Bay fm newsroom - Inland Fisheries Ireland is working on controlling and eradicating pike in lakes upstream of Lough Corrib.
The issue has been raised with the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys, by Galway West T.D Éamon Ó Cuív.
He says the introduction of pike into lakes upstream by 'irresponsible people' poses a major threat to the pearl mussel in the Owenriff river.
Minister Humphreys says her department will carry out a fish host survey, including the Owenriff river this year.
This will sample juvenile salmon and trout for mussel larvae and will review available fish data to assess trends in host fish populations.
Deputy Ó Cuív says swift action needs to be taken to protect the pearl mussel.
