Galway Bay fm newsroom - Wellpark in the city is set to get a new Lidl discount supermarket, despite opposition.
An Bord Pleanála has granted planning permission to Radical Properties Unlimited Company to convert the former PC World building at Wellpark into a supermarket.
The city council had initially granted planning permission for the new Lidl store in Wellpark.
Independent grocers' group, RGDATA appealed that decision claiming that the 'out of centre' location of the Lidl store goes against Retail Planning Guidelines which aim to protect the viability of the city centre.
Despite this concern, An Bord Pleanála has decided to uphold the decision of the city council and allow the Lidl store development go ahead.
The higher planning board says that the new Lidl store would not be detrimental to the viability of the primary retail function of the city centre.
An Bord Pleanála has granted planning permission for a Lidl store at Wellpark subject to 8 planning conditions.
One condition stipulates that the developer must agree a non-corporate way finding scheme for the basement car park.
