Minister Eamon Ryan gave the assurance to Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon during a topical issues debate, in Dáil Eireann, this week.

Deputy Cannon argues that additional rail services are badly needed between the city centre and Athenry due to the significant population growth in the area over the last twenty years.

It's estimated that Athenry's population has doubled to 5,000 in the last two decade, while a similar increase has been recorded in Oranmore.

Minister Ryan has confirmed that this year the National Transport Authority is funding a feasibility study for development options on the rail corridor.

Deputy Cannon told Keith Finnegan on Galway Talks the route is one of the busiest in the country.
