The extensive Regeneration Plan for Clifden town and its environs does not yet contain any specific location for a new car park.
This issue has taken on added significance given that car parking space is set to be more limited on the streets of the town.
The proposed reduction in car parking spaces on the town's streets has been the greatest source of contention concerning the Clifden Regeneration Plan.
The planning permission application for the developments at the Clifden Quay, at the Handball Alley site and in the town centre has been submitted but without a clear picture of where a new car park may be located.
A site close to the Clifden District Hospital was originally pinpointed but that plan appears to have fallen out of favour.
It has now emerged that a plan has come into the picture which would entail a two story public car park to the back of Hulk Street; that is where the present car park is located.
While adding another upper layer to the park would mean significant building work and costs, it is understood to be seen as a viable option.
This development may emerge as a separate part of the Clifden Regeneration Plan.
