Galway Bay fm newsroom - Galway city councillors have called on the executive to conduct a full review of parking control bye-laws, in the interest of clarity.
The emergency motion led by Fianna Fail councillor Ollie Crowe was tabled at the final meeting of the existing city council this week and received the support of 14 members.
The meeting heard that residents in areas including the Claddagh, Bohermore and Woodquay have raised concerns that applications for permits are being turned down in many cases.
These include scenarios where the property has some off-street parking but also requires on-street parking to accommodate the household.
The matter was discussed at a well attended public meeting held in the Claddagh last month (April).
Fianna Fail councillor Ollie Crowe argued there is no consistency in the way the bye laws from 2009 are being interpreted and said there has been a marked reduction in parking permits across the city.
He argued that any change in policy should come before elected members.
Fellow party councillor Peter Keane said there is a very loose interpretation of the existing bye-laws and clarity and definition is required.
CEO Brendan McGrath said he would bring a report on the issue to the next meeting.
