Senator Eugene Murphy says Fianna Fail left him with no choice but to leave the party and contest the general election as an independent candidate in Roscommon-Galway.
It's after Fianna Fail decided not to add the veteran politician and former TD to the ticket, instead favoring a single candidate in Ballygar GP Dr. Martin Daly.
Responding to the news, a Fianna Fáil spokesperson says they regret to hear of Senator Murphy's decision to resign.
Senator Murphy said he fully supported Dr. Martin Daly - but both he and grassroots felt two candidates would be vital to secure a seat in the constituency given the recent boundary revisions.
He says he stayed loyal to Fianna Fáil "through thick and thin" - but he was left with no choice but to go a different direction.
