Galway Bay fm newsroom - Today marks an emotional return visit to the Aran Islands for two Italian brothers dramatically rescued from Inishmore's Worm Hole two years ago
Tourists Giovanni and Ricardo Zanon had fallen in to very rough seas at Pol na bPheist in February 2019
When rescue 115 arrived on scene it was clear that one of the men was seriously injured.
CHC Winchman Phillip Wrenn was lowered to the brothers, and as the waves were getting higher and more unpredictable he made a decision to release from his winch in order to secure one of the brothers who had gone under water.
He then gathered both and all 3 were winched on board the rescue helicopter
The brothers were taken to University Hospital Galway
Ricardo was seriously injured with an open Tib/fib fracture.
After 2 years of treatment to rebuild a number of inches of bone in his leg he has travelled back to the Aran Islands with his brother and parents to thank the CHC Shannon based crew who operate Irish Coast Guard R115.
Winchman Mr Wrenn was later recognised for his bravery that day and received the Bill Deacon Award.
The brothers have just arrived on Inishmore, and we will hear from them on the News@1 for Galway
