Galway Bay fm newsroom - 46 million euro has been sanctioned for the CÚRAM - Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Medical Devices led by NUI Galway.
It's part of an investment worth 193 million euro announced today by the Higher Education Minister Simon Harris.
The investment of almost €200 million, in five Science Foundation Ireland Research Centres, will last for six years.
At over €46 million, NUIG's CÚRAM research centre has recieved the largest allocation nationwide.
CÚRAM aims to create a sustainable future for the medtech sector in Ireland and train the next generation of world class medtech scientists and entrepreneurs.
Simon Harris says the centres will carry out research into smart medical devices, e-health, telecommunications networks, as well as cybersecurity.
The Minister says the money will ensure S-F-I play a pivotal role in the years ahead in protecting the wellbeing of the population and the economy.
