Galway Bay fm newsroom - Design works have commenced for a major redevelopment of Oranmore railway station.
Minister of State at the Department of Transport and Galway West TD Hildegarde Naughton has confirmed that preliminary work has commenced on the project which will increase capacity on the commuter rail line between Athenry and Galway city.
The planned redevelopment includes a one kilometre passing railway loop at the existing railway station, which will allow trains to pass each other within the twin track section.
A second platform will be also constructed with a new footbridge over the rail tracks and lifts.
The project which has received over €9 million in funding through the Government’s Urban Regeneration Development Fund, with and additional €3 million from the Department of Transport, is expected to be completed by 2024.
Minister Naughton argues the enhanced commuter service will offer a feasible option for customers and reduce traffic congestion on the east side of the city.
