Galway Bay fm newsroom - The Department of Education has approved an application for a major expansion at Calasanctius College in Oranmore.
The school caters for around 800 students and has been forced to turn away new entrants on an annual basis due to a lack of capacity.
There were 318 applications for first year places at the school for the current academic year, while its official enrolment figure was just 168.
There were still 62 applicants on the school’s waiting list at the end of last September.
The expansion includes four classrooms, 12 special education rooms, a multimedia room, a textiles room, and two construction/engineering/tech rooms.
Junior Minister and Galway West TD Hildegarde Naughton who is a former pupil at the school says it's good news for the school and families in the local area.
