Galway Bay fm newsroom - A local TD has told the Dáil one of the main issues in her Ballinasloe office is the spiralling costs of renting - as well as the poor quality of accommodation.
Deputy Claire Kerrane was contributing to a debate on a new motion introduced by Sinn Fein, which aims to end the crisis in the rental sector.
Measures in the motion include a three year freeze on rents and tax relief for tenants equivalent to a months rent.
It also calls for an annual investment of €1bn to deliver at least 4 thousand affordable rental units every year.
Sinn Fein Housing spokesperson, Deputy Eoin O' Broin, said the intent is to deliver genuinely affordable rents of around €700 to €900 per month.
Speaking in support, Deputy Claire Kerrane said there is action that can be taken on spiralling rents - if the political will is there.
She outlined how rents are steadily increasing in areas outside rent pressure zones - such as Ballinasloe.
