Galway Bay fm newsroom - Over 19 and a half thousand people flocked to the first day of the Galway Racing
festival in Ballybrit yesterday with crowds up on last year.
Tote turnover and betting at the bookmakers were also up on 2016.
The opening day attracted a crowd of 19,663, up 812 on last year.
Tote turnover yesterday finished at just over 877 thousand euro, up 15
thousand euro on 2016.
Betting with the bookmakers was just over 1 million euro, up 17,000 on the Monday
last year.
The feature race of the day was the Connacht Hotel Qualified Riders Handicap which was won by Whiskey Sour from the Willie Mullins stable.
Among the crowd at Ballybrit was former Rose of Tralee, Maria Walsh and former Arsenal and England International footballer, Martin Keown.
Today is another evening meeting with the first race going to post in
Ballybrit at 5.20.
