Galway Bay fm newsroom - Crime in the city is down by 16 per cent according to the latest garda statistics.
Chief Superintendent of Galway Garda Division, Tom Curley presented the figures for 2016 to members of the City Joint Policing Committee this week.
They reveal a drop of almost a half (46%) in burglaries across the city, with a drop of 8 per cent on thefts from cars.
Assaults causing harm were also down by more than a third (35%) and minor assaults were down by 8 per cent in 2016 compared to the previous year.
The areas which did see an increase were road collisions causing serious injury which increased from 3 in 2015 to 7 in 2016.
Public order offences were also up by 5 per cent but the garda chief says this is most likely due to an increase in disposable income.
There was a 58 per cent drop in speeding offences in 2016 but the Chief Super said this is due to a glitch with the gatso speed detection vans, which has since been rectified.
Chief Superintendent Curley says increased co-operation between gardaí and communities is leading to a decrease in crime such as burglaries.
